RESUMO

This work was written with the intention of drawing a timeline of research done on the Negro (Afro-Brazilian) and his educuation in Brazil, South America. Presented are the literary works of Gilberto Freyre, Florestan Fernandes, Abdias do Nascimento, Guerreiro Ramos and Carlos Hasenbalg. These authors were responsible for constructing a wide-range body of knowledge about the Negro. As these authors did not deal with education specifically, but a variety of other subjects as well, our work was in part to locate the specific point in which the research dealt with the Negro and education. The 1980âs can be considered the time period during which there is increased interest in this theme, and, in various parts of the country a variety of meetings are held on this subject. Due to the need to better understand which were the revindications and proposals of that decade, several texts were selected, such as articles from the âCadernos de Pesquisaâ, 1987, entitled âRaÃa negra e educaÃÃoâ (The Negro Race and Education), a diagnosis on the situation of education for Negros (black or mulato) in the State of SÃo Paulo; from these were extracted elements of national value, as well as from the âAnais do VIII Encontro de Negros do Norte e Nordesteâ, minutes of a meeting held in Recife in 1988. The main subject of the event was the Negro and education. From these documents we were able to draw on elements that we can consider outstanding at that time - the 1980âs - when the entire country was dealing with the subject of the Negro and his education. Finally, we chose the Post-Graduate Studies in Education Program of the Federal University of Pernambuco to carry out this study so as to perceive how the Negro and his education are treated in this Program. We managed to find 6 (six) theses whose authors touch on this subject, among all the theses listed in the University between 1982 and 2005. In the texts we located the points where their authors reveal their involvement with the subject, some criticism stated due to the situation of the Negro in education - generally speaking - and also presented is how education functions in face of the difficulties the Negro faces
