RESUMO

This research presents the results of the fish culture carried out in reservoirs of Pernambuco State arid area. It is described the fishing aspects and it is estimated the productivity of the reservoirs. Environmental and social- economics changes as consequence of the artificial introduction of young fishes are suggested. The studied area includes the hydrographical basin of the rivers BrÃgida, Terra Nova, Pajeà and MoxotÃ, which are temporaries and tributaries from the SÃo Franciscoâs River. The fish culture reservoirs are located in a region that has a rainfall less than 600mm.year-1, low vegetation cover and a thin sedimentary layer allowing a quick freshwater drainage, which emphasizes the dry clime. During the studied period 5,621,581 young fishes of Cyprinus sp., Prochilodus sp, Leporinus sp, Colossoma macropomum and Oreochromis sp, were distributed in 1,130 reservoirs, located in 45 towns and in four hydrographical basins. Socially, the fish culture contributed to the participation of approximately 11,000 fishermen and fishermen/farmers (10 per reservoir) in the fishery activity. When adding their families (3 per fishermen), which participate of the fishing activity, nets repair, confection of artesinal tools, construction of boats, benefits, transport and fish commercialization it represents directly and indirectly a total of 44,000 beneficiaries. The total production is estimated in 2,361,064kg of fishes, that with a medium price of R$ 1.2 per kg, increases the inland economy in an order of R$ 2,833,277.00 (Two thousand, eight hundred and thirty three million, two hundred and seventy seven reais). The estimation of the fishery production transformed in nutritive complement (0.35 Kg of fish/meal) means an offer 6,745,897 meals rich in protein of animal origin. The quantity of young fishes distributed was considered ridiculous when compared with the real necessities. These distributions are used much more to comply with a request to politicians and to the spreading of the fish activity in continental waters than to a production work, fishery management, biological control and/or utilization of the water stored in the reservoirs. Nowadays the studied reservoirs are not properly managed or controlled. In consequence, in the near future environmental unbalance, water degradation and bad reservoirs conservation will occur; problems like a deficit or saturation in the reservoir productivity capacity will affect the environment by excess or shortage of live organisms in the aquatic ecosystem
