1. Usefulness of a multiplex PCR for the rapid identification of Candida glabrata species complex in Mexican clinical isolates
ABSTRACT Candida glabrata complex includes three species identified through molecular biology methods: C. glabrata sensu stricto , C. nivariensis and C. bracarensis . In Mexico, the phenotypic methods are still used in the diagnosis; therefore, the presence of C. nivariensis and C. bracarensis among clinical isolates is still unknown. The aim of this study w

2. Characterization and comparison of yeasts from different sources for some probiotic properties and exopolysaccharide production
Abstract A total of 134 strains of yeasts isolated from fruits and vegetables (certain berry fruits, apples, pomegranates, carrots and grapes), free-range chicken feces and dairy products, and from 10 commercial yeast preparations were identified and subjected to analyses to determine their in vitro probiotic properties. Based on 26S rRNA sequence analysis a

6. The Antifungal Properties of Peppermint and Thyme Essential Oils Misted in Broiler Houses
ABSTRACT This study aimed at evaluating if essential oils misted in broiler houses reduce environmental fungi counts. The investigation was conducted in three experimental rooms, where broiler chickens were reared between 1 to 42 d of age. Every three days, the rooms were fogged with pure water (control) or with aqueous solutions of peppermint or thyme oils.

7. The effect of magnesium on mitotic spindle formation in Schizosaccharomyces pombe
Abstract Magnesium (Mg2+), an essential ion for cells and biological systems, is involved in a variety of cellular processes, including the formation and breakdown of microtubules. The results of a previous investigation suggested that as cells grow the intracellular Mg2+ concentration falls, thereby stimulating formation of the mitotic spindle. In the prese

8. Yeast diversity associated to sediments and water from two Colombian artificial lakes
In Colombia, knowledge of the yeast and yeast-like fungi community is limited because most studies have focused on species with clinical importance. Sediments and water represent important habitats for the study of yeast diversity, especially for yeast species with industrial, biotechnological, and bioremediation potential. The main purpose of this study was

9. Bioethanol production from sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas L.) flour using co-culture of Trichoderma sp. and Saccharomyces cerevisiae in solid-state fermentation
The aim of this work was to study the optimiation of co-culturing of Trichoderma sp. and Saccharomyces cerevisiae (1:4 ratio) on sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas L.) flour (SPF) for the production of bio-ethanol in solid-state fermentation (SSF). Maximum ethanol (172 g/kg substrate) was produced in a medium containing 80% moisture, ammonium sulphate 0.2%, pH 5.

10. Metabólitos secundários bioativos e mediadores de relação predador/presa de invertebrados marinhos / Bioactive secondary metabolites and predator/preys relationship mediators from marine invertebrates

11. Glucose(xylose) isomerase production by Streptomyces sp. CH7 grown on agricultural residues
Streptomyces sp. CH7 was found to efficiently produce glucose(xylose) isomerase when grown on either xylan or agricultural residues. This strain produced a glucose(xylose) isomerase activity of roughly 1.8 U/mg of protein when it was grown in medium containing 1% xylose as a carbon source. Maximal enzymatic activities of about 5 and 3 U/mg were obtained when
