25. Production of aguardente of sugar cane of açucar for immobilized cells.
Besides the economical and social importance of Brasilian sugar cane spirit, there aren t many studies about its production methods. The increasing demand of this product by internal and external markets leads to an increased attention to its quality. The Brasilian sugar cane spirit is very appreciated by its characteristic aroma and flavor, as a consequence

This thesis studied submerged high cell-density cultures (HCDC) of recombinant Escherichia coli identifying important kinetic parameters on growth and production phases. Several strategies to obtain HCDC were studied aiming to develop a robust fermentation process that allowed: High cell dry weight per liter; to determine the nutritional conditions to expres

27. Development and characterization of microfiltration hollow-fiber modules for sterilization of fermentation media
Sterilization of fermentation medium involving heat may result in undesirable chemical reactions that alter nutrient concentration and yield products, which interfere in the fermentation performance. Sterilization of heat-sensitive compounds usually involves separate sterilizations of carbon source and nutrient solution. Membrane separation processes are an

28. Use of tower reactors for continuous ethanol production
The purpose of this work was to develop a continuous fermentation system operating with a tower reactor using some flocculent yeast strains isolated from an industrial process. The strain was an used in the trial of the proposed system, composed of two serial glass tower reactor. The effects of the following variables were studied on the yield and productivi

Chrysotile is a constituted mineral of silicate of magnesium of fibrous abundant in Brazil and it can be used as mineral support for yeast cells in continuous fermentation for ethanol production with immobilizedcells, which don t move fteely in the aqueous phase of the reactor, contributing to elevate its cellular density that promotes the speed increase of

30. Liquid-liquid extraction by reversed micelles in biotechnological processes
In biotechnology there is a need for new purification and concentration processes for biologically active compounds such as proteins, enzymes, nucleic acids, or cells that combine a high selectivity and biocompatibility with an easy scale-up. A liquid-liquid extraction with a reversed micellar phase might serve these purposes owing to its capacity to solubil

31. IMMOBILIZED Saccharomyces cerevisiae AND Leuconostoc oenus FOR ALCOHOLIC AND MALOLACTIC FERMENTATION IN CONTINUOUS WINE MAKING
The use of sugarcane stalks to immobilize microorganisms by adsorption in continuous fermentation was investigated. The canes were peeled and cut horizontally and transversally into pieces 2 × 1 × 1 cm3. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was employed to verify the external and internal structure of the sugarcane stalk support prior to cell immobilization.

The possibility of using chrysotile asbestos fibers as a carrier for pure strains cells of Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Baker s yeast immobilization was investigated. The fonned chrysotile/cells complex was experimented in continuous process for alcoholic fennentation and asymmetric reduction of ketones. The alcohoIic fermentation in batch operation using ba

The addition of fiber glass, admixed with activated chrysotile improves the structural properties of packed-beds, resulting in highlys stable bases for use as continuous reactor nucleus. The oxidizing capacity of MnO2 and TiO2 immobilized onto chrysotile in continuous reactors stabilized with fiber glass was investigated. Methanol, ethanol, n- propanol, i-pr

The main subject of this work is the application and development of the advanced predictive control strategy, DMC Dynamic Matrix ControI , to an industrial continuous fermentation process in multiple stages with cells recyc1e. This fermentation process presents higher nonlinearities (a characteristics of distributed systems) and time-delay in the measurement
