RESUMO

This piece of research endeavors to shed light on the formation trajectories and the universe of work of a professional category identified as environmental educators. To that purpose, an introductory discussion brings up present problems in the realm of Environmental Education (EE), its institutionalization, and the professionalization of its agents against a legal apparatus which contemplates EE on all levels and teaching modalities, requiring, therefore, its positive insertion in educational policies. Marx and Engels historical materialism provides the theoretical framework for the understanding of the contemporary universe of work along with Gramscian perspectives, which help think such educators as intellectuals. Recent studies in the realm of EE subsidize the central issues stemming from the memorial texts, the data source of this research. Under the light of Bakhtins enunciation theory, it has been possible to move further than just an interpretation of the narratives of happenings and ideas, reaching beyond the non-said. Before the central question of the investigation How have environmental educators traced their formation pathways and professional action? conclusions point to space-time diversity as for environmental access as the primary characteristic of those trajectories, unveiling a broad spectrum starting at an initial motivation in childhood, moving on through possible options in the undergraduate years with research and continuing education, up to the requirements presented by the universe of work, and reaching the graduate years, which emerge as a way to meet the needs of a precarious formation incapable of facing the demands from a critical environmental realm. Reports meant to a diversified public by a large variety of professional activities are examined, yet subject to alienating and precarious structures of the universe of work under capitalism. Higher qualification stands for the enlargement of the loci, functions, and of time consumed by work. There is a dominating discursive register which tends to ignore the limits of education to social environmental transformation. The professionalization process is marked by historical confrontations and dualisms either multidisciplinary or interdisciplinary, either theory or practice, formation in either the undergraduate or the graduate years, either critical or traditional EE many times unveiling contradictory aspects in the formation and the exercise of EE .
