RESUMO
The aim of this research is to analyze the appropriation process of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) by a group of literate adults, the Community Health Agents (CHA) of Pedreira city, in São Paulo state. The ICT that were considered in this study included the computer and its peripherals, software tools, resources available on the Internet and tools in the distance education environment, TelEduc. This is a qualitative research study based on the research-action methodology. Face to face and online interactions with CHA were analyzed over the course of 1 (one) year training period. The following instruments were used for data collection: interviews, local observations, and fieldwork surveys that allowed registering the dynamic in the evolution of the learners? appropriation process. The training activities were carried out in the CHA?s working environment, which created in service learning opportunities for using the available ICT. The learners experienced situations that allowed them to reflect upon and to incorporate the acquired knowledge into their daily routines. In general it was possible to show from this research that simply providing access to ICT was not sufficient to guarantee the appropriation of these technological resources by the learners. Many factors interfered in the appropriation process of each individual and the group of CHA, requiring a variety of political, educational and methodological strategies. More important than providing ICT access, this study showed that in order for the ICT appropriation to occur it was necessary to provide the CHA with access to knowledge, expertise and education
