RESUMO

The objective of this dissertation is to investigate the factors that influence the index of repetition of the subject âMathematics Iâ, among students from the Administration, Accounting, and Economy courses, at a private higher education institution in the Federal District. The data, collected through the use of instruments, were analyzed according to the characteristics of a case study, and the priority was to find answers to the established objectives. The study was carried out in three stages. In the first stage, carried out in conjunction with the institution, data to prove the low performance in the course and the index of approval of the students in the subjects involved were raised, referring to the chosen period (1st semester of 2001 to 1rst semester of 2003). In the second stage we tried to identify the probable factors for failure in learning, from the points of view professors and students. In the last stage, we attempted to cross data from the questionnaires applied to students and those applied to professors, and the interviews with professors. Some of the factors mentioned by the student body were: not enough dedication to their studies; excessive absences; and taking too many subjects at once. These difficulties contributed significantly to students academic failure, along with teacherâs pedagogical practices, and the fact that the calculus classes in the courses selected for this research are not sufficiently connected to the realities of the professions involved. In addition to all of this there are also difficulties caused by the low performance of students on the Mathematics test included in the university entrance examination, which may possibly interfere with their performance during their university course
