RESUMO
This thesis describes Availability Management based on Internet Network Management (SNMP), as the main means of controlling infrastructure, and emphasizes the benefits in terms of reduced frequency and duration of service failures. It also appraises the best practices required to ensure availability for a given service, keep statistics of its usage and ensure that it will be up again as soon as possible in the event of failures, and generate a knowledge base of IT outages and the steps taken to correct them. Availability management may be used to project server loads on telecommunications links and on datawarehouse-based physical networks, thus allowing IT investments to be rationalized by holding network information and activity level statistics, including incident data, which may be represented in graph form. The case study methodology is used to analyze the management and administration situation facing a company computer network. The ITIL Best Practices model was adopted to support the latter. This analysis leads to an Availability Management proposal. A strong trend perceived in the course of developing this thesis is the enhanced operational quality of the Network and its services, so that organizing technological support is seen as added value" for the business. Keeping the technology that provides support for the company under strict control will certainly boost Network Availability and provide optimized result-based administration. Planning schedules for technological services will then fulfill requirements determined by the business and required availability levels will then be agreed, measured and controlled to support service-level management
