RESUMO
Thinking about the presupposition that the act of laugh can be an effective way to denounce behaviors considered unacceptable by social conventions, by moral and by ethics, this paper analyzed three plays by LuÃs Carlos Martins Pena â Os dois ou O inglÃs maquinista , O noviÃo e O diletante â trying to see the linguistics and stagesâ features used by that dramatist to criticizes the 1800s society presented in those plays. To accomplish that, we made a historic review to talk about the âcomÃdia de costumesâ, we presented considerations about laugh and his relation with the society and we discussed about the economic and social situation of Rio de Janeiro in that time. The results of this research shows that author, by laugh, criticizes the failure of the institutional, legal and familiar relations of the Brazilian society of that period
