RESUMO
In search of what characterizes us Brazilians, we travel from present to past in a deep analysis of how the interior of our 19th century houses were built, particularly in regards to the influence of the French Culture. The interior of the Bourgeois Brazilian houses was, during this period, the stage of significant transformations in terms of ornaments, typology and building techniques, as a result of intense commercial and cultural exchange between our country and Europe. From the old continent, France had the most cultural influence in all social aspects, which merged with our colonial way of living. We intend to demonstrate that the Brazilian house, more specifically the homes of Recife, have witnessed during this period a multitude of habits, artistic styles and technologies, completely in line with the heterogeneous cultural characteristics of the Brazilian people. From a simplistic and efficient way of living, common to the colonial times, the homes of Recife, adopted new building techniques, new materials as well as more diversity on ornaments and furniture, illustrated in several cases studies
