Criminalidade entre portadores de esquizofrenia de uma instituiÃÃo de custÃdia e tratamento

RESUMO

The author presents a transversal description study held at the âCustody and Psychiatric Treatment Hospital of Pernambucoâ, between July 2004 and March 2006, aimed at schizophrenic patients that committed some kind of crime and are in prison, under corrective penalties or waiting for judgment. Data has been collected from medical profiles, filtered by mental illness, crime committed, age, profession, level of instruction, socio-economic status, marital status and duration of prison sentence. Forty schizophrenic patients have been surveyed (both genres). The Structured Clinical Interview for Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders â Fourth Edition (SCID-IV) was applied to those patients. The crimes committed by the schizophrenic patients were studied under the light of the Brazilian law. 85% of the subjects were men. The average age of the criminals was between 24.7 and 39.3 years. 72% of the schizophrenic were paranoids, 65.8% were single. 36.6% were illiterate, 97.5% were in low Socioeconomic Status. 42.5% do not use any kind of drugs (except nicotine), 35% use alcohol, 17.5% use multiple kinds of drugs and 5% use only marihuana. The leading crime was homicide (55%) and was committed against family (68%). Murders at home represent 47.5% of these homicides. Schizophrenia was the more frequent mental disorder among the psychotic disorders studied. Crime and violence in schizophrenic disorder have been related to genre, low socio-economic condition and drugs abuse, besides place and the kind of relationship with the victim. Schizophrenic patients do not represent the major contributors to criminality. The results of this study might help to reduce the prejudice against schizophrenics and help their treatment, lead then back to society and improve their life quality
