RESUMO

The intense connections that people establish with their dwellings are transfered to a street, more precisely the âRua Grandeâ street, the symbol of a memorable past, a reference point for the city of SÃo LuÃs and a stage for innumerous and memorable happenings, playing a fundamental role in its history. Our focus of interest falls, on the appropriations and social-spatial practices, which residents, former residents, merchants and former merchants developed on the above mentioned street. This research analyzed the âRua Grandeâ stretch; lying between the JoÃo Lisboa square and the âRua do Passeioâ street, covering an area of approximately 760m, it is ten blocks long and contains 118 real estate buildings. The choice for studying this spatial cutout was made, for its sector being the densest of all streets, in commerce as well as in dwelling. By being aware of the importance this street has on the lives of its users, and trying to understand how the physical and spatial alterations influence the constitution of its identity, to then determine its meaning, we consider the theoretical reference of the Social Representations of utmost importance in disclosing the reasons which allow these groups to act one way or the other towards the âRua Grandeâ street. Thus, we privilege having had the knowledge in the area of Social Psychology, which allowed a more in-depth comprehension of the representations of its intrinsic web of meanings.
