RESUMO

This study analyses the challenges and the perspectives of the teacherÂs continued formation at the Higher Education level taking as objective to promote a conscious practice of the teaching process. It presents historically how the process of the teacherÂs formation has occured. Although the Higher Education institutions promise to offer a qualified teaching, the teacher keeps lacks on his formation. We carried out a research from a programme of continued formation for Higher Education teachers. The objective of this course is to create a place for the teacherÂs discussion on his problems and anguishes on the everyday classroom matters. Thirty-two individuals were selected: working as teachers, among men and women, with graduate degree, either specialist or master and doctorate. It was suggested for them to answer a questionnaire as volunteers without naming themselves. Interviews were also recorded. From the results came up two categories: âthe difficulties in being a teacherâ and âobjectives and results achieved with the continued formation courseâ. The positive result found in the testimonials is noted, especially on the teacherÂs understanding about his students and his teaching practice. These testimonials indicate the importance of the continued formation programmes at Higher Education level, meantime it is still an unusual practice. Therefore, the importance of teacherÂs continued formation is settled on the perspective for a better quality and greater responsibility on citizenship formation without losing sight of the structural dimension of this issue.
