RESUMO

Objective: To evaluate the nutritional state and the body composition of schoolchildren, from two near cities of West of Parana, that present distinct racial groups; Ceu Azul (white people) and Vera Cruz do Oeste (black people). Methods: 1,433 children from different races were included, with ages between 6 and 11 years old from both sexes. The measures of weight, height, body mass index, mid upper arm circumference, mid upper arm circumference, triceps and subscapular skinfolds, arm fat area, arm muscle area and the sum of the skinfolds were transformed in score z accordin to NCHS data. The body fat percentage was also calculated according to Slaughter et al. The values below -2 and above +2 from the score z were adopted as cut points, and for body fat percentage, it was used the Lohman standard. A descriptive analysis from the data was realized and applied the chi-square statistics, Fisher?s exact test, variance analysis and Tukey tests with significance of 5%. Results: Independently of the age, significant differences were observed in weight, height, subscapular skinfolds, arm fat area and sum of the skinfolds in the white boys when compared to white girls, and, only, in the arm muscle area and height the black boys in relation to black girls. In relation to the frequency of the variables below -2 DP, only the mid upper arm circumference and the muscle area, both races presented values above 7%, although it must be emphasized that triceps and subscapular skinfolds, fat area, sum of the skinfolds and body fat percentage, in both races, presented values next to zero. In relation to the frequency of the variables above +2 DP, only the body fat percentage presented values above 5% in both races. The socioeconomic level was statistically different between the races, the lower levels were more prevalent in the black children. It was found a statistically significant difference in weight and height in the white boys between the high and low levels and in the weight in the high level between the white boys and the white girls. Conclusion: Although the socioeconomics and racial differences found, important changes in the nutritional state and in body composition did not be observed in this group of children
