RESUMO

Many studies have been developed in order to discover secrets regarding the comprehension matter. Related to researches in this field, our study has the purpose of analyzing which conception of comprehension is performed in English classrooms. To attend this purpose, we observed interactive activities between teacher and students in eight English classes given to students in upper-intermediate level of Letters course at Universidade Federal de Pernambuco. To this corpus we added data from a sociolinguistic interview made with the teacher. By doing this, we could contrast the comprehension conception under teacherâs behavior, as revealed through classroom interaction recording, with the comprehension conception revealed by the teacher in interview. Observation of classesâ transcription showed that teacher uses many questions as a way of evaluating studentsâ comprehension, so we found it important to conduct an analysis of those questions made in classroom. The previous observations already say the work line is under an analytical and interpretative perspective, joining presupposition and theoretical concepts mainly from Ethnography of Speaking and Interactional Sociolinguistics. The first school gives us categories, which make it possible to identify how linguistic behavior is influenced by the event characteristics and the second one avails meaningful concepts to analyze the interaction between the research individuals. Results show that, in interactive activities between teacher and students in classroom, students have little participation during activities developed, belonging to the teacher conducting the interaction in most cases through questions. There are divergences between teacherâs theoretical conceptions and his practices in classroom. Comprehension activities consist mostly in translating activities of lexical terms, occurring little space for more inferential questions that could stimulate studentsâ thought
