UtilizaÃÃo da meiofauna bentÃnica no monitoramento do cultivo do camarÃo Litopenaeus vannamei

RESUMO

The recent expansion of intensive aquaculture worldwide has caused severe environmental damage to coastal ecosystems. Shrimp farm effluent may be the major pollution source in estuaries. Considering meiofauna as pollution indicators and Copepoda Harpacticoida the most sensitive to pollutants, the influence of shrimp farm effluent in the Botafogo estuary was assessed. Botafogo River and Siri River (control site) were sampled during low tide in February, April, August and October 2003. At each estuary, three sampling stations were located on midlittoral area. Besides Meiofauna, physical-chemical and sedimentological descriptors were also measured. Meiofauna was quantified and identified in high taxonomic level groups and Nematoda was the most abundant taxon. Meiofaunal densities were considerably higher on Botafogo than Siri River. Robertsonia mourei was the most abundant copepod species on both estuaries. Concerning Copepod densities, there was a slightly difference between Botafogo and Siri. BIOENV analysis indicated chlorophyll-a and pheopigments (rs=0.363) on the Botafogo River and salinity on the Siri River (rs=0.568) as the best variables explaining meiofauna structure and pheopigments and nitrogen concentrations (rs=0.603) on the Botafogo and pheopigments concentration (rs=0.224) on the Siri River as variables explaining Copepod group structure. ANOSIM âtwo wayâ indicated significant differences (p<0.05) between Botafogo and Siri estuaries, among the months and the stations both using meiofauna densities and copepods species data. Water-sediment descriptors showed eutrophication state of Botafogo River suggesting that aquaculture has been affecting it negatively, and meiofauna community seems to be responding to eutrophication showing to be useful on monitoring pollution studies
