RESUMO

An analysis of the touristic destination of SÃo LuÃs (MA) with emphasis on the international demand. It is a documental research on data from SUDENE and GEPLAN/MA gathered within the period of 1996 to 2001 referring to the tourist profile of SÃo LuÃs (MA) and from direct and intensive observation towards the evaluation of facts and phenomena connected to tourist activity in the capital of MaranhÃo. Despite the natural and cultural beauties that compose a unique and differentiated city, SÃo LuÃs (MA) has only been able to attract a small amount of foreign tourists. Therefore, this dissertation is aimed at identifying and analyzing some of the factors that have made it difficult to achieve a full development of receptive international tourism in the city. In order to accomplish that goal the following points will be taken into account: the profile of the foreign tourists that have visited the place, the characteristics of theirs travels and the evaluation of the infrastructure, equipment, services and the tourist attractions. A comparison among the outputs of the eight main tourist destinations in Brasil based on a tourist international demand study made by EMBRATUR in the period cited above, has been carried out in order to strengthen the conclusion of this work. In recent years government authorities have devoted more attention to the tourism sector since it has been showing outstanding increase of income generation and distribution, more direct and indirect job offer and on the government income. Therefore, this work represents an important contribution to the public and private areas making it easier to define objectives, strategies and policies for the tourism realm
