RESUMO

This work aims at analyzing transitivity in newspaper editorials as a genre, considering that this lexico-grammatical category, based on Systemic-functional Linguistics, contributes to build opinions in this genre variation. In order to identify the editorial profile, this work sets up similarities and differences in that genre variation from the description and interpretation of the multimodal resources used and from the investigation of the role of the transitivity system in the construction of the editorial meaning. This work is based on the presuppositions of Systemic-functional Linguistics, specially, those related to the Transitivity System; the studies on Textual Genres and on Discourse Multimodality embedded in the notion of language as social activity. The corpus is formed by 72 editorials taken from the following newspapers: Folha de SÃo Paulo, Jornal do ComÃrcio, Folha de Pernambuco and the following magazines: Ãpoca, Veja, Ãpoca, Uma e Todateen. The 72 investigated editorials have 31.444 words represented in the 767 analyzed clauses. The study on the transitivity system, in the exemplified clauses throughout this work and in fourteen editorials, built up results which allow us to conclude that: (i) the types of process build the editorial opinion, mainly, when it introduces actions and events, (material processes), classifies and defines, (relational processes). This also occurs when it reports discourses, (verbal processes), creates entities (existential processes) and externalizes cognitive or affective experiences, (mental processes), thus, the transitivity system fulfills, in different ways, the function of representing internal and external world experiences and, consequently, contributes to the construction of meaning in the editorials. (ii) the participants, in turn, represent the entities of private and public sphere in the editorials, providing them with dynamicity, highlighting traces, exhorting virtues, conferring attitudes and characteristics. (iii) finally, the different ways of arguing carried out by types of processes, participants and circumstances, in relation to other choices, express the opinions in the editorials, showing that the transitivity system has, in fact, a significant role in the construction of the editorial genre
