RESUMO

As the statistics in Brazil, following the world tendency, have shown a significant increase of elderly people, increases the importance of simple and low cost solutions for some commonly problems in the third age. This work presents the implementation of an expert system to generate indicative of cognitive decline, dementia and depression, in order to help in the diagnosis of these pathologies that are of larger occurrence in elderly people nowadays. The cognitive tests Mini Mental State of Examination, Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS), Clock Drawing Test, Katz, Lawton and Tinetti, used in the series of tests known as Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment (CGA), were used in the development of the system. Data of 195 outpatients and inpatients were collected in two institutions of Curitiba that uses the CGA, generating as results statistics data of the studied population. The system, an Artificial Neural Network Multilayer Perceptron implemented in Java, was tested and evaluated in a control group of 58 patients and the final results were considered good to detect the disturbances, with correct rate for diagnosis of 70 % in cognitive decline, 78 % for depression and 100 % in dementia
