RESUMO

This dissertation is concerned with the topics of sense and language games in the Philosophical Investigations, which we believe to be really important for an understanding of Wittgensteinâs philosophy of language. An inquiry into the topic also helps us understand the pragmatic changes in the conception of language and, as a result, also in the conception of sense proposed by Wittgenstein in that text. For this reason, I have made an effort to understand the view of sense held by Wittgenstein in the early stages of his thinking in order to understand better the position which he abandoned and, in so doing, to cast light on the position adopted in the Investigations. I then address the way in which the Investigations approaches the notion of sense, by first presenting its rejections of attempts to explain sense by recourse to some reference detached from the public use of language, and subsequently going on to see if it makes room, at least once, for a distinction between sense and meaning. I then sutudy the relation between sense and language games and, on this basis, also study the semantical consequences of the way sense is treated in this work of Wittgensteinâs. This made it possible for me to see that the Investigations does not define sense, but rather tries to present uses of language games which make sense to users in certain contexts. I also note that, at least once, the Investigations seems to relate sense to the ends attached to the uses of sentences or language games and that this lays still greater emphasis on the dynamic and public aspects of sense. In addition to that, I further note that one of the most important semantical consequences of the way in which the Investigations addresses the notion of sense is that sense is not shown in facts, but in language use, as it occurs in the very use of language games, which is a tool for comparison purposes, not for a description of facts
