RESUMO

The importance that is given to the relationship among science, technology, society and environment has been leading, more and more, to the valorization of an educational approach that links specific contents to political, economical and cultural aspects. In Brasil, environmental issues have found a place in the professional education at secondary level, with a more strategic role being given to the teachers that work in it for the formation of the future workers of the technical and the technological area, in order that qualification may have a critical vision, which allows students to associate it with social and environmental development. Professional education must be committed with the transformation of work methods, besides citizen formation. In this context, at Centro Federal de Educação Tecnológica Celso Suckow da Fonseca (CEFET-RJ), a theoretical and empiric research was held, within descriptive methodology, with an approach that is both qualitative and supported by quantitative data that were derived during the research. As data gathering instruments that were applied to researched teachers and students, semi-structured interviews and questionnaires were used, respectively, besides some observations made by the author. Furthermore, the analysis of official documents of the institution, laws and educational opinions were also dealt as data sources. The objective was analyzing, in a multireference context, the influences that environmental issues, within the syllabus of the secondary level Automotive technical course of CEFET/RJ, generate in the process of professional formation. The research aimed at answering the following question: Do environmental issues, within the syllabus of the secondary level Automotive technical course of CEFET/RJ, contribute to citizen formation? It was assumed that environmental issues, within the syllabus of the secondary level Automotive technical course of CEFET/RJ, do contribute to citizen formation. Results point to, from the perception of subjects involved in the research: the fact that environmental issues within the referred course are dealt throughout all formation process; teachers and students recognize that professional practice of the automobile area generates significant impacts and that an appropriate formation with a specific environmental themes approach is an essential factor for the citizen formation in this area; that there was no critical citizenship acquisition by what was extolled by the CTSA movement and Environmental Education; that it is necessary both the implant of Environmental Education and the creation of a CTSA syllabus in the professional CEFET/RJ automobile area; and that the subject Environment Management should be inserted in another period of the course in question, so that students can effectively link environmental issues to the strictly speaking technical area.
