RESUMO

This study aimed to (1) identify possible relationships between socio-demographic characteristics of parents of students with Down syndrome enrolled in the Public Education System of Barueri, SP, Brazil, as socioeconomic status, educational level, age , marital status and type of school attended by the child and (2) the meaning given to educational inclusion and the expectations they have for the schooling of their children. Knowledge about general aspects of Down syndrome, the important role played by the family in their kids development, and about school inclusion has guided this study. Data collected with the application of the Brazilian Socioeconomic Assessment Questionnaire (CCEB) and of semi structured interview to 60 parents were analyzed qualitatively and objectively as well. The results showed no relationship between socioeconomic status, educational level and age of the participants and the meanings attributed to the inclusion in school or the expectation they have about the schooling process, but indicated the relationship between marital status and type of school attended the child and the meanings given. Data were discussed considering the socio-historical aspects regarding school inclusion of students with Down syndrome, such as prejudice, socialization and the social function of the school.
