RESUMO

Since the installation of the Landulfo Alves Refinery in the 1950s, the process of industrialization in the federate-state of Bahia has generated investment in infrastructure both from the federal and state governments, concentrated in the metropolitan region of Salvador and in the petrochemical industry. This strategy adopted by industry in Bahia of specializing in intermediary goods was reevaluated in the 1980s. Consequently, in the 1990s, the federate-state government began to encourage industrial diversification. The objective of this study was to analyze the importance of the work carried out by SENAI/BA in the 1990s in the qualification of the workforce within this context of industrial development and diversification in Bahia. The analysis was based on the ideas of the principal theorists on professional education, globalization of the economy and industrialization in Bahia. Two companies that represent this new configuration of industry in Bahia were selected for the case study: Monsanto and Ford. The data for the study was collected during interviews with managers at Senai/BA and at the State Department of Labour and Social Work. Data available at SEI was also used. The study confirmed the hypothesis that Senai/BA, working in partnership with industry and in tune with the state governments industrial development policies, has contributed towards the qualification of the workforce that has in turn collaborated towards attracting new industrial investments to Bahia.
