RESUMO

The main purpose of this work is to examine a textual genre called TV programme announcement spot. Despite being an important device within media, it has not been studied by scholars in a systematic way. Announcement spots of three soap operas by Globo TV â LaÃos de FamÃlia (âFamily Bondsâ), Porto dos Milagres (âMiracles Portâ) and O Clone (âThe Cloneâ), all of them broadcast at 21:00 â were chosen as a corpus. Globo TV is the greatest producer of soap operas in the world and soap operas certainly are the programmes to which the most varied categories of programme announcement spots are dedicated. Those two factors establish them as the ideal object to this research. In order to characterise TV programme announcement spot as a genre, we studied its basic remarks. Social routines within the announcement spots were analysed, as well as other discourse fields and its linguistic singularities. At the end of our work, we managed to show that TV programme announcement spot is, actually, a recognisable large unit. However, it could be subdivided into different categories, as they attend to specific purposes of television self-promotional production. We contemplated different kinds of announcement spots using discourse genres theorists â especially Bakhtin (1997 [1979]), Bronckart (1999), Maingueneau (2002) and Marcuschi (2003) â as a support. Those authors believe that discourse genres are a phenomenon which one can find in society (as a result of a social praxis) and that genres establish and organise interactions among social actors, causing a better apprehension of discourse. Because of that, theorists do not endorse genres as a linguistic product
