RESUMO

The object of this work is the study of the four short-stories from " Céu em fogo" by Mário de Sá-Carneiro, published in 1915, in its first edition. The aim of this essay is the DOUBLE phenomenon approach through the characters analysis from the romances mentioned, taking as basis some concepts which come from Freudian psychoanalysis and from philosophy, starting from some theoretical texts by Clément Rosset, Sigmund Freud and Otto Rank, turning possible a philosophic reflexion, through Rosset, and a literary reading, under the view of psychoanalysis, through Freud and Rank, having in mind that both philosophy and psychoanalysis, approach the theme of the double under different perspectives. Moreover, both disciplines offer a contribution to the students of literature, once it is built through symbolism and allow a reading plurality which are in their imaginary world. After the analysis of the short-stories "A grande sombra," " O homem dos sonhos," " Eu-próprio o Outro" and " Ressurreição," it was possible to obtain some results. The double appears in all of them, due to the psych conflicts of the characters, who express their lack of social adaptation, their identity crisis and the personality division. The confrontation with their double has in their texts a symbolic and metaphysics dimension. The processes of the development lived by the characters make part of a kind of self-knowing process, bringing up on them a feeling of fear and fascination. It was also possible to verify different ways of demonstrating the double through dream, delirium, projection of the self on the other being, with a flowing transposition of the conventional time and space, emphasizing the presence of the reality fragmentation. This is what is going to be shown in the study of the short-stories approached in the corpus of this work.
