RESUMO
The purpose of this dissertation is to analyze A confissão de Lúcio (Lucio‟s confession), a narrative by Mário de Sá-Carneiro. This study will be based on the theory of the double and the fantastic applied in the process of the narrative construction. An investigation of the role of the first-person narrator in this novel is also aimed at, because, in this narrative, he is presented as trustworthy, but narrates his own story revealing a questionable memory. Concerning the theory of the double, this work will be analyzed based, mainly, on Otto Ranks and Freuds theories, and relating to the fantastic, the support will come from Todorovs conceptions. The double theme appears in the narrative especially in the creation of an unexpected love triangle, composed by Lúcio, Ricardo and his enigmatic wife (Ricardos supposedly double), which makes it possible for the reader to have more than one strange understanding of the adventure experienced and narrated by Lúcio.
