RESUMO

The focus of this research was the study of some aspects related to the continuum oral/writing in a bilingual community (German/Portuguese) located in the west of Paraná. The results showed that members of the speech community speak a German dialect which is proper of that group, and they also speak a solidarity language. This solidarity language is named "Brazilian" ( brasileiro). Besides these two languages (dialects) there is another one, Portuguese which is considered the model (pattern) for official texts as well as any kind of written message. This context can be considered bilingual and bidialect as well. On the one hand, the linguistic ecology allows a diglossic distribution in a net of social relationship. On the other hand this linguistic richness causes conflicts of ethnic linguistic identity It makes people identify themselves sometimes as Brazilians and sometimes as Germans. The proficiency of the speakers in German Brazilian and the standard Portuguese (the language of the school) is evaluated by the community members considering the four linguistic abilities speaking, reading, comprehension and writing, which is considered the most important ability.
