RESUMO

The goal of this work is to investigate the main characteristics of performance measurement of the melon producing companies located in the fruit producing area Mossoró/Baraúna. In order to attain the objectives proposed in the research, a bibliographical review was carried out with the intention of knowing what has already been explored in the specialized literature. A research, which had as data collecting instrument a questionnaire with objective questions directed to the managers of the whole 21 companies registered in the COEX (Executive Committee of phytossanity of the State of Rio Grande do Norte), was carried out. The SPSS program, version 13.0, was used to carry out the descriptive analyses of data, as well as non parametric statistic tests (Fisher and Qui-square tests). Four of the hypothesis tested were rejected: the relation between managers time experience in the sector and the benchmarking utilization; the relation between the size of the company and the assessment of its performance; the relation between the size of the company and the fact of the company presents EUREPGAP certification; relation between the time of existence of the company and benchmarking utilization. Two hypothesis were accepted: the relation between the fact of the company presents EUREPGAP certification and make use of performance assessment, and the relation between the managers degree of instruction versus the lack of business methodology to implement a system of performance assessment. The financial indicators more frequently used were related to Human Resources and Transportation. As for the non financial indicators, it is necessary to give special attention to the quality product indicator. The results show that the organizations of this sector (95,25%) do not make use of any performance assessment system mentioned in the specialized literature, although they consider performance assessment an important factor for the business.
