RESUMO

This paper shows the results of a research conducted in the agropolo fruiter Mossoró/Assú. Located in the western region of Rio Grande do Nortes state, the agropolo is the Brazilian largest melon producer and exporter. The development of irrigated fruit trees in the Northeast and the growing demand for healthy and fresh foods, especially in more developed regions of the planet, have created a window of opportunity for the exportation of the product, since its output coincides with the melon season in the northern hemisphere. Currently, the melon is the first item on the state export list. Its production generates a set of activities that significantly boost the regional economy, favoring the development and improvement of living conditions of local people. The general objective of this research was to investigate, in the producers view, the main factors involved in the development of the chains melon logistics. It were identified and analyzed the characteristics of the region, described and analyzed the chains melon logistics , and identified and analyzed the main factors that help or hinder the production of melons and the development of its logistics chain. The theoretical framework was developed in order to structure questions to be explored in the research, covering issues related to Supply Chain, Logistics, Fruits, Poles and Culture of melon producers. The research had a qualitative and a quantitative approach, using the case study method for the descriptive and exploratory analysis. It was used questionnaires, interviews and direct observation as a tool for collecting primary data. The sample were 17 melon producers from the universe of the 42 most important producers. The results identified the most important flows in the logistical melons chain - consolidating them in a matrix origin-destination - and highlight the profile of the production and consumption agents. It was confirmed a mainly exporting segment. The municipality of Mossoró was identified not only as the main melon producer, but the large core generator and receiver of the actions promoted within the pole fruiter. With regard to production, there is the participation of manufacturers of household economy, labor organized in cooperatives and associations, and the domain of large producers. It were identified, in the producers view, two major sets of factors involved in its development. The first eight factors that favor and the second with eleven variables that hinder the growth of activity. The results suggests that the agropolo fruiter Mossoró/Assú have attributes contributing to their development and to enable new opportunities to generate employment and income for the region. On the other hand, there are a number of factors that hinder this process and, therefore, demand action from both public and private initiative to be overcome or minimized the impacts they cause in the logistical melons chain and in the regional economy.
