RESUMO

This monograph has as its goal to study how JoÃo Paulo and Cadoca, the main candidates running for elections for Recife in 2004, build their discourse in propaganda. This study is based upon the theory of enunciation written by Bakhtin, and on the French tendency of discourse analysis written by Authier-Revuz, Maingueneu and Moirand, above all it is based on the principle of dialogism (or heterogeneous discourse) and on its conception of language, discourse, meaning and genres. By linking these theories, it is defined the discourse position as the enunciation identity that a speech builds within a determined context, based on dialogic relations of antagonist discourses. The methodology was defined after the studies started. The Analyses comprehends the linguistic and discourse aspects, according to the following: the discourse strategies, dialogism, and, finally, how the candidates build the discourse. The corpus includes 43 propagandas produced during the Campanha MajoritÃria de Recife (Campaign) in 2004, 19 are from the Frente de Esquerda (Left Party) made by the candidate JoÃo Paulo and 24 of the Frente de Direita (Right Party) made by the candidate Cadoca, Those propaganda show the debates about: health, inhabitation, employment and income. The results of the analysis showed that linguist aspects, the discourse strategies and the dialogism lead to similarities of the two parties. The analysis also proved that the parties make the propaganda based on radio news format, which are based on validation discourse memory and legitimates their politic speech. Regarding such similarities it was attested that they build different discourse position. The Frente de Esquerda (Left Party) builds its discourse by defending that the government should interfere on the social and economic aspects, for the poor and the welfare of society. Whereas the Frente de Direita (Right Party) is contradictory: it simulates sympathy for the discourse of the opponent to criticize it, however, it shows its conservative and neo-liberal positions when it defends that the government should not interfere on the social and economic aspects
