RESUMO

Blindness, the theme of this research, was studied through the peculiar case of the Belarmino family, composed of seven siblings blind from birth. My familiarisation with five of them produced interviews whose central theme was the conformation of the real for persons who possess neither sight, nor, consequently, a repertory of images. Their descriptions of the spaces and sensations that they experienced pointed to the limits of language as an instrument of communication. This study thus contains a reflection on the relationships established between the individual and the world when permeated by communication, relationships which I ascertained to be simultaneously both of revelation and concealment. I analysed blindness and its discourse from the approaches of complexity. Three of the authors of this new paradigm appeared as a basis and direction for this research. Edgar Morin provided the concept of dialogic and it was through this cognitive operator that I saw blindness and approached it. Meanwhile, Humberto Maturana and Francisco Varela provided the tools for the hypothesis: that relationships between the living organism and the world come about constructively and not representationally. Reality thus arises as a product, born and nurtured from the interactions and the couplings between body and milieu, that is: an ontogeny. Through its format, the text of this thesis endeavours to incorporate as much as possible some recurring questions that pertain to the complexity approach itself. Its architecture attempts to reinforce the tenuous boundary between subjectivity and objectivity, between science and art. In this study blindness and its discourse take on the mixed form of scientific dissertation and literature, thus following the principle that every description of the world is also necessarily an act of creating it
