RESUMO

Intelligence is a subject of multidiscipline interest drawing the attention of professionals in the fields of education, behavioral science and healthcare. The epidemiological view is yet another contribution to possible preventative actions that favor the universal acquisition of this important human characteristic. Two articles were written for the present dissertation: a literature review and an original article. For the literature review, articles were researched on child cognitive development addressing protection factors, risk factors, resilience and vulnerability. The Lilacs, Medline and Scielo databases were searched using the following descriptors: IQ, cognitive development, vulnerability, risk, resilience and cognition. The literature demonstrates an important association between cognitive development and socioeconomic factors, stressing motherâs schooling, stimulation at home and income. For the original article, a cross-sectional study nested in a cohort study was carried out to determine what bio-social factors were associated to the cognitive development of children at eight years of age â all residents of coastal rural areas in the state of Pernambuco, Brazil. Biological aspects at birth as well as biological, socioeconomic and demographic aspects at eight years of age were analyzed. In this survey, we found higher cognitive development indices associated to a better level of motherâs schooling, per capita household income, stimulation at home and private schooling. We conclude that the protection of cognitive development in childhood could be favored by prioritized educative activities directed at families and improvements in the public school system
