RESUMO

The present study examines the presence and treatment given to false cognates from Portuguese to Spanish in bilingual lexicographical works that aim to assist Portuguese-speaking consultants, Spanish language learners, to produce texts in that language. Taking Contrastive Linguistics, Metalexicography and Bilingual Lexicography theories as principle, we attempt to identify the inaccuracies that general and special bilingual dictionaries often present, with regard to false cognates, in order to present adjustments and propose alternatives to overcome the inadequacies observed. In order to achieve this goal, information was collected from general bilingual dictionaries (general BD) and dictionaries of false cognates (DFC), which, when studied contrastively, allow to point out the limitations of these works and enable, based on the theories used, to propose some solutions to the problems encountered.
