RESUMO

The question of False Friends existing between two pairs of languages have been explored by researchers from different areas for many years. But, it was from 1928 on, with the publication of the book Les Faux Amis or les trahisons du vocabulaire anglais of Koessler and Derocquigny, that the studies in this area have taken a new dimension, taking part mainly in studies of Contrastive Linguistics and covering different pairs of languages. The studies already carried out about this issue have clearly shown that the false friends are unanimously classified as such under two criteria: 1) formal and/or phonological similarity; 2) partially or totally different meanings between the two languages involved in the phenomenon. A third criterion of classification of false friends, and for which there is no unanimity among researchers in the area, refers to the etymology of those words. As there are certain disagreement in relation to the criteria of false friends classification, some studies were accomplished with the aim of presenting new proposals of designations and definitions about what is and how this phenomenon appears, as the works carried out by Serey Leiva (1994), Perez Velasco (1995, 2003, 2004), Sabino (2006) and Seccato (2006), among others. Based on this panorama, our research intends to define and conceptualize what false friends are and it also presents a terminology that explains scientifically what that phenomenon is. In order to develop our work, we took advantage of the etymology of the lexicon named as false friends in the Spanish-Portuguese axis wich are present in some Spanish teaching textbooks for Brazilians, specifically those for the adolescent and adult public. According to the contrastive analysis of this lexicon, following the footsteps submitted by Lado (1957) and Durão (2004), we realized its linguistics description in order to ascertain the origin of these words, and the real meanings found in dictionaries they present in each of the two languages. Holding this description, we observed that the false friends phenomenon constitutes, in fact, cases of polysemy and homonymous interlinguistics, according to the classification used by Perez Velasco (2004). As result of this research, we created two glossaries with the false friends analyzed between the Portuguese and the Spanish and we classified them, according to its etymology, in polysemy and homonymous interlinguistics.
