RESUMO

A newborn hearing screening program has as it main goal to evaluate all neonates, in order to close an audiological diagnosis, as soon as possible, with immediate intervention, leading to a adequate speech and language development. The main purpose of this study was to analyze the firs two years of implementation of a newborn hearing screening program, at Clinical Hospital, at Federal University of Pernambuco. This study was characterized by its observational, descriptive, cross-sectional aspects. Participated 1686 neonates and infants who attended the program. The analyzed variables were: (1) number of births; (2) number of neonates and infants who were screened; (3) newborn hearing screening results; (4) number of neonates and infants Who returned to re-test; (5) results from the re-rest; (6) age in which the newborn hearing screening and the re-test were realized; (7) interval between the newborn hearing screening and the re-rest; and, (8) presence or absence of risk indicators for hearing loss. The results showed that 18,1% and 42,6% of the neonates and infants failed, during the first and second year of program implementation. To the re-test, 17,4% and 29,9% of the neonates and infants attended, during the first and second year of program implementation. The analysis between the newborn hearing screening (NHS) results and the risk indicators showed that 96,1% and 74,3% of the neonates and infants who failed had one or more risk indicators, during the first and second year of program implementation. The NHS program at HC-UFPE cannot be considered effective, as it did not meet the quality indicators proposed. However, the results improve with the evolution of the program, leading toward universality
