RESUMO

The goal work was to determine the sensitivity of rose cultivar Osiana to ethylene, and the influence of 1- methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) under different conditions of storage on the vase life. To determine the sensitivity to ethylene the cut flowers were treated for 24 hours in chambers with different concentrations of ethylene (0.0, 0.1, 1.0, 10, 100, 1000 μL L־). The rose shown to be sensitive to concentrations higher than 10 μL L־ethylene, showing premature fall of the petals still turgid, and according to the literature, it can be characterized as a cultivar with medium sensitivity to ethylene. The first experiment with 1-MCP was composed of two conditions, the wet storage for 7 days in cold room at 5C and at 22 C, using four concentrations of 1-MCP (0, 0.5; 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0 g m־ Ethylbloc). The concentration of 1.0 g m־ was effective in prolonging the vase life of flower stems. Higher concentrations did not show any additional effect on longevity, suggesting that the receptor sites were already saturated. The cold storage at 5 C for 7 days provided a smaller vase life, but no difference in efficacy of 1.0 g m־ Ethylbloc in promoting an increase in longevity on stems kept at room temperature. To evaluate the effect of inhibitory action of 1-MCP in the presence of ethylene, it was set up another experiment, that consisted of treatment for 24 hours with 10 μL L־ of ethylene after the treatments for 24 hours with 1-MCP at concentrations of 0, 0 , 5, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0 g m־ Ethylbloc. Indeed, the 1-MCP prevented the effects caused by ethylene in reducing the longevity and floral opening. To evaluate the effect of 1-MCP under the dry conditions of storage, the stems were treated for 24 hours with 1-MCP at concentrations of 0.5, 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0 g m־ Ethylbloc. After the treatment, the stems were wrapped in paper "strong" and stored for 3 and 7 days in cold room at 5 C. The 1-MCP did not promote an increase in longevity under these conditions of storage, and storage for 7 days induced a lower longevity after the storage.
