RESUMO

This research paper deals with gender and Children Education which is considered by the law (Lei de Diretrizes e Bases da EducaÃÃo n 9394/96) the first step to basic studies aiming at a complete education of the children in their full potential. This level of education has been mainly done by women, this fact aroused interest to investigate the feminine presence in the teaching of children. Taking this fact into consideration the paper discusses a few questions of gender which go beyond the task of teaching young children such as feminine professionalization, public and private sector, educating and caring. In the theoretical review the paper highlights gender (Guacira Louro and Joan Scott) and the path followed by Children Education in Brazil (Ana Cerisara e FÃlvia Rosemberg). Focusing on female children educators, this paper tried to get to know their understanding of Children Education and gender and how they express the existing relation between these two elements. A qualitative methodology was applied by using a semi-structured interview as an instrument to collect data. A thematic analysis of content was adopted in search of understanding the meaning of what the educators said. Data show that the educators value professional qualification and try to match technical competence and affective relations. Nevertheless, although the dichotomy and polarization of gender has been criticized, they still reveal marks of female socialization based on domestic task and mothering, specially in what concerns caring little children. According the analized data, we pointed the need of enlargement of the discussions inside the Children Education, mainly in gender issues such as educating / caring and professional valuation
