RESUMO

This paper presents the result of a lay teachers working with elementary school students in a town located in a rural area the interior of Pernambuco State, Northeast Brazil. The aim of the study was to get to know the social identity of the teachers, as they were working before obtaining the necessary formal qualificacions. The study was based on two concepts, the first one being social identity understood as the psycchosocial process resulting from successive identifications and the second being social path understood as the route taken by each individual following a system of family-innherited tendencies. The data were from doccuments concerning the formation of the lay teachers and by means of interviews carried out among a group of eight recently trained lay teachers. Verbalization analysis gave us the opportunity to perceive that the social identity of lay teachers is built when they are still students with the attributes confered to them by the other members of their social enviroment, who choose them as subjects capable of successfully putting into practice the task assigned to them. Nevertheless, we have found out that lay teachers only acquire a professional identity built on a positive self-image at the end of the teachers training course
