RESUMO

A good understanding of water dynamic in soil during the crop development is essential for improvements in practices aiming the productivity optimization. This way, the current work had the objective to evaluate the water dynamic in the soil cultivated with the cowpea crop growing in the mountain region of Paraiba, Brazil (âBrejo Paraibanoâ), at two different periods of the year: with no water stress conditions (March 11, 2003 to May 30, 2003) and under water stress (July 28, 2003 to October 22, 2003). To determine the water balance, in a 4 ha area of the CCA/UFPB, Areia-PB, in three plots, a 120 cm access tube for neutron probe measurements, and 8 tensiometers were installed in each plot. Rainfall measurements were made. Infiltration tests were performed for the determination of the soil hydraulic conductivity. The results show that the water flux at 60 cm depth occurred always downward at the cultivated periods, with 50.6 and 61.4 mm for the first (March 11, 2003 to May 30, 2003) and second (July 28, 2003 to October 22, 2003) period, respectively. The total and average actual evapotranspiration of cowpea was 290.1 mm and 3.62 mm d-1 e 184.6 mm e 2.14 mm d-1, for the period without and with water stress, respectively. The crop yield of cowpea was 888.5 and 205.9 kg ha-1, for the period of March 11, 2003 to May 30, 2003and of July 28, 2003 to October 22, 2003, respectively.
