Competências organizacionais e estratégias de internacionalização :um estudo multissetorial em indústrias de pequeno e médio porte da região Alto Uruguai do estado do Rio Grande do Sul

RESUMO
The intensification of international trade facilitated by the telecommunications and ways of transportation makes the companies seek for new markets and improve their ways of acting. This study describes how happens the internationalization of small and medium industrial firms of the region of Alto Uruguai of Rio Grande do Sul and which are the indispensable organizational competencies to establish and sustain the process. It is a multi-case study with qualitative and exploratory-descriptive approach and applies content analyses method. The study was performed with nonprobabilistic and convenience sample of sixteen industrial exporters of small and medium-sized firms from food, metal-mechanic, furniture and paper and bags industry. The study s results point out that the companies apparently followed the internationalization path predicted by the Uppsala model. Initially, the companies expanded to culturally and geographically close countries, specially to South American neighbor countries, and later, with a knowledge background they attempted efforts to improve the level of involvement with foreign markets. Some companies presented born global features, exporting since the firm s establishment. Furthermore, both went through a gradual path of involvement, as much as the companies or the managers learning. The main competences necessary to establish or sustain the internationalization are concentrated in how to identify clients, understand their needs and the quality and service products attributes. The study infers that the firms can benefit from internationalization to access new knowledge and generate new competences necessary to sustain their activities. The main competencies which can help companies improve their performance concern in planning the future and being able to face the changes in the environment and developing organizational culture and management propitious for international trading.
