RESUMO

This work addresses questions related to the analysis of proportions, its possible role in organizing the structures of musical discourse and its relationship with the coherence of this discourse through an investigation of the elements that establish cohesion and coherence among the pieces that make up the set of ten Improvisos para piano by Camargo Guarnieri. Based on an analysis of these Improvisos, the author seeks to establish a relationship between the possible presence of proportional elements and the compositional processes associated with improvisation. The ten pieces in the set of Improvisos were examined in terms of the proportions between the component parts within the same piece (intraopus) and in all the pieces as a set (extraopus) using two approaches: a) directly from the score (spatial proportion) and b) from a recording (temporal proportion). Following structural analysis, the system of proportions proposed by Charles Madden (in relation to the Golden Section and the Secondary Golden Section) and the ratios of a half, a third and two thirds proposed by Elizabeth Rangel were applied. The results reveal a preference for simple proportions (a half, third and two thirds); none of the Improvisos was within a 0.1 to 1% margin of a Golden Section or a Secondary Golden Section; and the cohesion derived from the sequential distribution and organization of the pieces in the set and the quoting and referencing of melodic and harmonic configurations. Among the issues raised, the suggestion is put forward for future studies that proportionality, indirectly perceived as form, may establish coherence in proportion through formal structure, which, if confirmed, may help in understanding proportionality as the historical origin of form and as having given rise to the process of formal and structural organization.
