RESUMO

This study analyses the relationship between the writing done in a native language with that done in a foreign language by examining the types of writing errors that can be attributed to the mother tongue. The research presented is based on the theoretical aspects dealing with the interference of the mother tongue in the acquisition of a target language, the writing process of the mother tongue and its implications in learning the writing process of another language. This analysis seeks to formulate a classification of errors. The focus of the investigation was a language center in Brazils Federal District. The data was collected from two compositions, one done in the mother tongue (Portuguese) and the other in the target language (English), and questionnaires. The research results show that students with a greater knowledge of the mother tongue, a conclusion reached by analyzing their compositions, tend to produce compositions in the target language that were richer in vocabulary, better organized and which used more sentence connectors. However, we also noticed that even though the compositions were better written in terms of their structure, the use of connectors was not, for the most part, correct. This fact gives rise to the idea that an attempt was made to produce texts that were more cohesive and coherent, even though the attempt was not necessarily successful. On the other hand, students with a lesser knowledge of the mother tongue produced more simple texts in the target language, without subordinate clauses or any type of connectors except for the conjunction and. It was also discovered that several sentences were literal translations from Portuguese, especially those of a colloquial variant. Based on the results obtained, we propose several suggestions to teachers and students regarding the role of the mother tongue, its relevance and its effect in the teaching/learning process of a foreign language, especially in how it applies to textual competence.
