RESUMO

Brazilian cinema has gone through various changes since 1995, year which saw the beginning of a period known as the âRetomadaâ, when film production resumed. As a reflexion of these times, the work of film critics published in the cultural sections of Brazilian daily newspapers also underwent changes. This projectÂs aim is to analyse the development of critical discourse towards Brazilian cinema up until the year 2002. The texts utilized as objects of analysis are reviews for the films Carlota Joaquina â Princeza do Brasil, directed by Carla Camurati, Central do Brasil (Central Station), by Walter Salles, e Cidade de Deus (City of God), by Fernando Meirelles and KÃtia Lund, published at the time of each of the filmsâ releases by dailies O Estado de S. Paulo, Jornal do Commercio and Zero Hora. We believe these changes were brought about by direct links between the specialised press and the filmgoing public, the specialised press and the socioeconomic Brazilian infra-structure, and film critique as a means of cinematic expression on several technical levels. We see in Discourse Analysis, through its French ramification, a useful theoretical apparatus for identifying in the written text the traces which establish the dialogue between the critic and his object of appreciation, as well as an instrument for understanding the mechanics of change
