RESUMO

This research aims to investigate and ponder on the importance of inputs, which are collected from Social Representations about spaces built through urban interventions, as acquirements able to support the design and revitalisation planning of those areas. The CalÃadÃo dos Mascates (Pavement of Hawkers) in SÃo Josà district of Recife, is the corpus of analysis elected as example and issue of Urban Design. We pursue to reveal the environment day-by-day in its different ways of settling and marking the environs, based on enquires of speeches, gestures, conceptions, practices and ways of using whose identity is socially constructed and shared with the place. Our starting-point defends that aspects inherent to localisation, use and conservation of areas undergoing contemporarily urban intervention show us the gap between Urban Planning and daily life. On one hand, should Urban Planning ought to consider the local history and its specificities, on the other hand, it has to come closer to the usersâ perspective. The methodology hereafter applied assumes a qualitative approach based upon the Theory of Social Representation proposed by Serge Mascovici (1961), as well as further investigate how traders see the CalÃadÃo dos Mascates by comparing samples of informal traders, who are settled in that place, to those of street vendors point-of-views
