RESUMO

This dissertation analyses the relationship between mining and transformation industry in Brazil and the world. It tries to evaluate the particular situation of this relationship in Brazil from a case study concerning the glass industry in São Paulo State. The concept of integration is very wide and it has at least two meanings: the integration between mineral activities and the enterpreneurship integration by the acquisition of different production stages. This work tries to discus the concept mainly from a theoretical point of view: the industrial integration ?downstream? to the mineral raw materials relating them with main characteristics of supply and demand for minerals. In the beginning some historical aspects that made the Brazilian industries concentrate in São Paulo State are resumed. In the following section some classic: concepts are presented, referring to specific points of mineral industry. In the next chapter, the principal characterist1cs of the supply and demand markets are analised for São Paulo State. A specific chapter is dedicated to integration theory and some figures are examined, concerning ?linkages? between mineral activity and the transformation industries. This section discusses some examples of feasibility or not of this integration. The sixth chapter analyses the glass industry in São Paulo State, the consumption of raw materials and industrial ?integration? in this activity. Finally, some considerations about tendencies in Brazilian mineral sector are presented as opposed to international experiences and how they could influence the integration process in Brazil
