RESUMO

The aim of this work was analyze the relation between the penitentiary guard and the inmate, by the sight of the latter and verify the inmateâs coping skill on facing the imprisonment.. The work was specially supported in the studies of Foucault, Girard, Goffman and May. During the work, all these authors and their concepts were related to the concept of over-sentence, that would be sentences or accessories difficulties imposed by the penitentiary guard to the inmate, for his inferior situation of being imprisoned. The work choose the quantitative analysis, privileging observations and interviews as forms to obtain information and built the perception about the inmate life. The information was collected in a penitentiary of Minas Gerais State, where the researcher has acted as psychologist for two years and six months, and in a public jail in Paracatu-MG. Although the difficulties found in collecting information, specially because of the resistance of the penitentiary institution in provide them, the study showed that the intersubjective relations that both actors are submitted are linked to the matter of power and they interfere on the interpretation of the context and on its relations. The inmate tends to feel the penitentiary guardâs action over him as a manifestation of a total power, thought the exercise of the small power and supported by systems of revenge-fear, of colonization-submission, and of negation of the Other-I.
