RESUMO

In this study, we analyze some narratives of everyday life in Latin American contemporary cinema, regarding the images and representations of work presented in films such as Y tu mamà tambiÃn (2001), Whisky (2004), Silvia Prieto (1999) and Los guantes mÃgicos (2003). We take these as a base from which we can configure wider questions and establish recurrences, sometimes referring to the filmmakersâ previous works, sometimes to other significant references of the same period. For that, we assume the perspective of cultural studies interweaving with the Latin American cultural criticism, also approaching the theories of everyday life. As we discuss how these narratives reinforce the political status of the cinema of the region, we first highlight a movement: from the militant discourses to a more fragmented view which focuses on details and also the ordinary aspects of life. Departing from this debate, we reflect upon the ways in which these works are related to an imaginary of desertion which gets the powers of evasion back. We also look upon the possibility of a subtle slide between multiple daily life spheres as a means of dreaming of an escape in the midst of an oppressive social environment and work. In this sense, we think of the yearning for the idea of a double set of dissidence: outbursts that escape both the imperatives of a militant ethic and the siege of a market culture that distributes, unevenly, opportunities and needs
