RESUMO

This dissertation presents three papers in which we investigate the determinants of time allocation of couples to labor market and domestic activities. We use Brazilian data from âPesquisa Nacional por Amostra de DomicÃlio - PNAD 2004â. In the first essay, we study the determinants of labor supply for dual-earned couples. The theoretical base is the collective model, which is currently considered in literature the standard tool in the study about the behavior at the household level. The results confirm the adequacy of the collective model to the Brazilian case. The estimates show that regional differences, years of school, fertility and characteristics of the labor market are key in the determination of married women. Moreover, the participation of the family in social programs is an important factor decreasing the supply of hours worked in the market by couples. The second paper deals with the impact of the Programs of Conditional Transference of Income, in particular the Bolsa FamÃlia, on labor supply of couples through the analysis of the participation and the hours supplied to the market. The empirical technique used was the propensity score. The results provide evidence that the participation in the Bolsa FamÃlia does not affect the probability of participation in the market of work of the spouses of beneficiary families. However, it reduces the hours worked in the market, and this impact is stronger to woman than man. The third essays deals with the allocation time of couples to housework activities. We test the neoclassic theory of domestic production based on the unitary model of Becker-Gronau and the bargain model. Results seem to support the bargain model, which suggests that the spouse with greater bargaining power work few hours at home activities. However, there is still unexplained variation in allocation of household time and further studies are needed. Probably, cultural and social issues, which are not captured in classical economic models, might play a big role to explain such variations
