RESUMO

A possibility of quantitative approach for productivity regarding scientific communication of professors from post-graduation programs in Information Science is discussed in this dissertation. Parameters of program productivity assessment were taken as reference, such as the ones assigned by the Comitê de Ciências Sociais Aplicadas I (Applied Sciences Committee) of the Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES (Coordination for Improvement of Higher Education Staff). The lack of measurement mechanisms for outputs of scientific meetings in compliance with the Committees criteria was the reason for this study to be carried out using data obtained from the Lattes platform of the Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico CNPq (National Scientifical and Technological Development Board), for creating comparative productivity pictures that should comprise abstracts and full articles in congress proceedings. Two big sets of variables were analysed from the period 2000- 2006: one that weighted the scores defined by the CAPES area committee and the other one that added to such scores the data contained in abstracts and full articles published in congress proceedings. From those sets, three comparative rankings were consolidated: for programs, research areas and professors. We noticed that the inclusion of congress-related variables have caused remarkable changes in all the rankings. Than, as mechanism for improving scientific communication channels it was recognized the need of CAPES considering the inclusion and corresponding ranking of abstracts and full texts of articles in congress proceedings for measuring the productivity of Information Science post-graduation programs. The scientific work of researchers within Information Science communities could be better acknowledged, so as to move this emerging area into a more autonomous knowledge field.
