RESUMO

This research aimed to understand some aspects of the executiveâs apprenticeship at petroleum and natural gas productive chain providing organizations. The inquiries which led this study were: a) How do the executives learn in their pratical and social context? b) What experiences in which of the executivesâ knowledge background were not enough for their performance at work? c) What strategies were used by the executives while facing experiences when their knowledge background were not enough for their performance at work? d) How was the executivesâ job changed by learnship? The theorical basis used in this research was composed by studies of project oriented learning (POL), experiential learning and executive work. This is a qualitative study of many cases and took place in three organizations in Recifeâs metropolitan area: MetalÃrgica, ENGEMAN and CODISTIL. The data collection was done through twelve semi-structured interviews, documents and observations. During the case inquiry, some cathegories broke out and, afterwards, a cross analysis of the cases was done. The main conclusions are: a) In their practical and social context, executives learn by interacting with partners, their superiors or co-workers of a lower hierarchic level; b) executives learn through disjunction experiences; c) executives learn how to face disjunction experiences using relationship networks, communities of practice (CoPâs), and reflection as strategies; d) the executivesâ job was changed by the development of skills to articulate different sets of knowledge about the executiveâs role: knowledge about the business, stablishment of priorities, use of power, chairing of meetings and communication.
